Kummooyeh
The Art of Korean Swordsmanship & Traditional Archery
Forging Mind, Body, and Spirit Through Ancient Discipline.
Kummooyeh uses sophisticated and elegant Korean martial art discipline that offers a unique path toward self-mastery. Distinct from unarmed combat styles, Kummooyeh focuses on the traditional weaponry of Korea’s warrior past: the sword (Gumdo) and the traditional bow (Gungdo).
It is more than just learning to fight; it is a holistic practice that blends rigorous physical training with deep mental focus. It is the study of elegant power, dynamic movement, and meditative stillness.
At our academy, under the expert tutelage of Master David Henry, students embark on a transformative journey that builds character as effectively as it builds strength.
The Pillars of Kummooyeh
A Kummooyeh practitioner does not just learn one skill; they develop a versatile set of abilities steeped in history
Swordsmanship (Gumdo): Students learn the art of the Korean sword, moving beyond simple strikes to master fluid, dance-like forms (Hyung), dynamic cutting techniques designed to test focus and technique, and controlled sparring that develops timing and reflex.
Traditional Archery (Gungdo): The Korean bow is a legendary instrument requiring immense concentration. Archery training in Kummooyeh is a meditative practice, teaching students to quiet their minds, control their breathing, and focus their intent on a single target.
Why Practice Kummooyeh?
While the techniques are rooted in ancient warfare, the benefits of Kummooyeh are vital for modern life. Our program is specifically designed to foster growth in three key areas:
1. The Pursuit of Absolute Precision
Kummooyeh is an exacting art. There is no room for sloppiness when handling a sword or drawing a bow. Whether executing a complex sword pattern where every angle matters, or releasing an arrow toward a distant bullseye, success depends on millimeter-perfect accuracy. This training hones your mental focus, teaching you to pay attention to the smallest details in your movement, your posture, and your environment.
2. Forging Physical Discipline
This discipline provides a rigorous, full-body workout that looks deceptively effortless. Handling a sword requires significant core strength, balance, and coordination to move with grace and speed. Drawing a traditional bow demands upper body stability and controlled breathing. Through consistent practice, students develop a strong, capable body and, more importantly, the internal self-discipline required to push through physical challenges and master difficult skills.
3. Cultivating Unshakable Confidence
There is a profound and unique sense of achievement that comes from mastering the steel of a sword or landing a difficult arrow shot through pure focus. Kummooyeh presents challenges that seem impossible at first glance. As students overcome these hurdles under expert guidance, their self-esteem soars. This newfound confidence born of genuine capability and hard work transcends the training floor, empowering students in their everyday lives, careers, and academics.

Hapkido
Hapkido: The Science of Self-Defense
Mastering the Art of Harmonious Power through Precision and Leverage.
Hapkido is a comprehensive, dynamic Korean martial art designed for real-world self-defense. The name translates roughly to "The Way of Coordinated Energy" or "Harmony," unlocking the core philosophy of the style: rather than meeting brute force with resistance, a Hapkido practitioner learns to accept an opponent's energy, redirect it, and use it against them.
It is a highly versatile discipline that blends "soft" and "hard" techniques. It combines the fluid, circular deflections found in internal arts with sharp, powerful strikes and incapacitating joint locks.
Under the expert guidance of Master David Henry, students learn that effective self-defense is not about who is strongest, but who possesses the superior understanding of body mechanics and leverage.
The Pillars of Hapkido Training
Hapkido is a complete system of combat that covers almost any situation. A typical training session will cover a wide spectrum of skills:
Striking and Kicking: Utilizing powerful Korean kicking techniques and varied hand strikes to create distance or set up a control technique.
Joint Manipulation and Locking: Learning the biomechanics of the human body to apply pressure to joints, allowing a smaller person to neutralize a larger attacker without relying on strength.
Throws and Breakfalls: Mastering the ability to unbalance an opponent and send them to the ground, while simultaneously learning how to fall safely yourself—a crucial life skill.
Pressure Point Tactics: Utilizing precise strikes to sensitive areas of the body to disrupt an attacker's focus and energy.
Why Practice Hapkido?
Hapkido is a demanding but deeply rewarding martial art. Our curriculum is structured to ensure that as you learn to defend yourself, you also develop critical internal attributes:
1. Developing Biomechanical Precision
Hapkido is often described as the "physics" of martial arts. A joint lock or a pressure point strike does not require immense strength to be effective, but it does require exacting placement. A difference of an inch in hand placement or body angle can determine success or failure. Hapkido training demands that students pay exceptionally close attention to detail, fostering a mindset of precision that translates into better focus and concentration in all aspects of life.
2. Forging Physical and Mental Discipline
The path to mastering Hapkido requires dedication. Learning to execute complex throws or to repetitively practice falling and getting back up builds a resilient body and a disciplined mind. The training is physically rigorous, improving flexibility, endurance, and coordination. More importantly, it teaches the discipline of staying calm under pressure, training your mind to react rationally rather than emotionally in stressful situations.
3. Building Unshakable Confidence
True confidence comes from competence. There is a profound shift in self-assurance that occurs when you realize you possess the tools to protect yourself and your loved ones, regardless of your size. Hapkido provides practical, tangible skills for real-world scenarios. As students master these sophisticated techniques, they overcome self-doubt, walking through the world with a quiet, unshakable sense of security and self-worth.
